ISOLATION
Why we isolate, and how we combat this growing epidemic
DESIGN PROCESS
I was tasked with creating a 50+ page book, a motion, and a website in 3 months. Everything in the book was handmade or my own photography with only one photo being edited and sourced. I kept the book black and white as many in this state of isolation think in extremes or black and white thinking. I kept the font to Helvetica due to it's very straight and bland font that though readable doesn't have any decorative properties. I used the type and images in isolating ways whether that is separated form each other to clinging to the edges.
IMAGERY
I hand drew in pencil, and digitally on Adobe Fresco, as well as scanned books of my own of poetry and mental health books I had. I also used ink in water to create photos.

CONCEPT
Starting with the word illusion I came to the word isolation through a mind map pathway. As I researched about Isolation I found out there has been a growing epidemic recently. Through type and handmade images I convey the painful reality that isolation causes as well as how to best solve it.
TYPOGRAPHY
Helvetic was used due to it's use of practicality, and being overly used. Isolation creates a dull and lifeless feeling without others and Helvetica captured that best as it is bland and great for readability and to compliment other type, but alone it can be quite bland. I also hand wrote the chapter titles.

The book
MOTION
I wanted to create a lonely feeling through both sound and motion. Here you can hear a typewriter and a gust of wind to create a lonely feeling along with the ripping of paper that reveals the statistic that half of us are suffering from loneliness.
WEBSITE
A dynamic exploration of the book's themes through movement and sound. Watch how the concept of isolation transforms when brought to life through video.
